CEBRI organizes events at Climate Week in New York City

  • 02 october 2024

In the last month, CEBRI was present in New York during Climate Week with a series of events aimed at deepening the discussion on strategically relevant topics for Brazil and the international community along the path linking the major multilateral forums under Brazilian presidency: G20, BRICS+, and COP30.

On September 18, a roundtable titled “Rethinking G20: main takeaways from T20 Brasil” was held, which presented and discussed the main policy proposals for the G20 resulting from the Think20 Brazil process, focusing mainly on three issues that are the key drivers of sustainable development in the 21st century: energy transition, climate financing, and digital transformation.

On September 22, CEBRI hosted the event “Navigating to COP 29 and the road to Belém”. The debate focused on critical aspects of the upcoming climate negotiations leading to COP 29, followed by COP 30 in Belém. In this context, invited experts shared expectations about COP 29 and the next steps toward COP 30, discussing key themes, challenges, and opportunities with insights exploring innovative financial mechanisms and strategies to accelerate climate action. The signs of a climate emergency were raised, particularly in Brazil, a country that has been and continues to be exposed to extreme weather events such as droughts and floods. Therefore, it is crucial to recognize that climate change is not solely related to the Amazon but rather to Brazilian territory as a whole, including vulnerable populations.

On September 24, the event “Critical Minerals: Unlocking a Low-Carbon Future” was held, aimed at bringing together key industry players from different countries and contexts to discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with critical minerals in the context of the energy transition. The discussion focused on priority issues such as aligning mineral supply with NetZero scenario needs, major obstacles and risks, as well as raising and debating climate risks through a perspective of justice, equity, and sustainability.
