  • 05 july 2024

On July 2nd and 3rd, the G20 community and members of Think20 Brasil convened in Rio de Janeiro for the "T20 Brasil Midterm Conference." Held at the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES), the conference saw active participation from national and international think tank leaders, academia members, representatives from private and public sectors, and civil society to discuss and propose solutions to major global challenges.

In addition to the Opening Ceremony with the T20 Brasil Organizing Committee and representatives from the conference's organizing bodies, the event featured six thematic panels addressing issues outlined by T20 Brasil Task Forces, such as combating inequalities, hunger, and poverty, sustainable climate action and energy transition, inclusive digital transformation, reform of the international financial architecture, international trade and investments, multilateralism, and global governance.

A significant highlight of the two-day event was the early delivery of the T20 Brasil Communiqué to the G20 Social representatives, as well as Brazil's Ministries of Finance and Foreign Affairs. For the first time, the document was provided in advance to the Finance Tracks and Sherpas, aiming to influence negotiations and the drafting of a joint statement during the G20 Leaders' Summit scheduled for November 18-19, 2024, also in Rio de Janeiro.

The T20 Brasil Communiqué offers concrete policy recommendations for the priorities of Brazil's G20 presidency. The proposals put forth, alongside recommendations from other engagement groups, will provide think tanks and various representatives from civil society and academia with the opportunity to influence the G20 decision-making process, shaping new paths for international cooperation that address the key global challenges of the 21st century.
