CEBRI issues a series of informative media contents in the year that Brazil assumes the Rotating Presidency of BRICS Plus

  • 15 january 2025

In light of Brazil's rotating presidency of the BRICS in 2025, CEBRI has prepared a series of contents to broaden the understanding of its members, the public, and other interested parties about the strategic group, its expansion, and its role in global governance.

BRICS is an informal multilateral platform originally composed of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. It recently expanded with the adhesion of Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Iran, and Indonesia. Despite not being institutionalized, 36 world leaders, including heads of state and government, attended the last Annual Summit, which shows the group's legitimacy and credibility in the international community.

Created to foster cooperation between developing countries in the economic, political, and social pillars, the BRICS has positioned itself as a new articulation platform that complements the current global governance system with its diplomacy and policies. In 2011, during the III BRICS Summit, held in Sanya, China, the group defined as its central objectives the reform and strengthening of the monetary system, the main international financial structures, and multilateral institutions, such as the United Nations, seeking to increase their effectiveness and representativeness in tackling global challenges.

In 2024, at the Kazan Summit, the category of “BRICS Partner Countries” was introduced. This initiative allows interested and authorized countries to participate in the group's activities, strengthening networks and expanding agendas of interest. Among the countries announced as partners are Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Nigeria.

To democratize knowledge and highlight Brazil's role in the presidency of the group, over the first half of 2025, we will publish information about BRICS Plus and its Official Summit, which will be held in July in the city of Rio de Janeiro, gathering heads of state and government in a space for strategic deliberation.
