On November 14–15, CEBRI took part in the agenda of debates at the U20 Summit. Held in Rio de Janeiro, the event brought together 87 mayors, municipal authorities, and delegations from over 100 cities worldwide to discuss the future and diplomacy of urban centers, focusing on climate, social justice, and governance.
On Thursday, November 14, the panel "Leveraging Climate Finance to Strengthen Urban Resilience: Cities Leading the Change," organized by CEBRI, the Wilson Center Brazil Institute, and Columbia Global Center Rio, convened experts to share strategies for building climate resilience in urban centers. The discussion highlighted public policies and innovative investments to foster sustainable cities through collaboration among governments, stakeholders, and civil society.
On Friday, November 15, the event "G20 and Urban Sustainable Development: Governance, Finance, and Politics" marked the launch of the book "Urban Sustainable Development: Governance, Finance, and Politics." This publication is the result of a partnership between CEBRI and the City Hall of Rio de Janeiro, developed with contributions from the Rio G20 Committee, Penn Institute for Urban Research (Penn IUR), Policy Center for the New South (PCNS), Columbia Global Center Rio de Janeiro, Inter-American Dialogue (IAD), and the Atlantic Council.
With over 20 chapters, the book provides theoretical foundations and offers analyses with policy recommendations for urban planning and solutions for sustainable urban development, prioritizing transparency, accountability, and justice. CEBRI Senior Fellow and editor of the publication, Marianna Albuquerque, emphasized, “This work presents concrete recommendations developed collaboratively by academics and government representatives to build the sustainable urban future that G20 countries need.”
