CEBRI promotes a meeting to discuss sustainable biofuels in Brazil

The global energy transition requires innovative business models for sustainable biofuels to become a central component in decarbonization efforts. Brazil, with its extensive biofuels industry, is well-positioned to play a leading role in this transition, leveraging sustainable biofuels to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors such as aviation and maritime transport. In this context, on September 23, CEBRI held a private meeting focused on the economic, geopolitical, and technological dimensions of sustainable biofuels and explored Brazil’s potential to play a prominent role in supplying sustainable fuels.

In parallel, CEBRI is launching a project to examine the feasibility of scaling up sustainable biofuels, such as Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), and to discuss their role in Brazil’s economy and energy strategy, as well as explore the global potential of biofuels in the aviation and maritime sectors. With an opening by Izabella Teixeira, CEBRI Trustee Emeritus and Former Environment Minister of Brazil, and moderated by Rafaela Guedes, Senior Fellow of the Energy Program at CEBRI, the event initiated discussions on these issues and gathered insights and recommendations from stakeholders.

The meeting was attended by Clarissa Lins, Trustee at CEBRI and Founder of Catavento; Heloisa Borges, Director of Oil, Gas, and Biofuels Studies at the Empresa de Pesquisa Energética (EPE); Mariana Espécie, Special Advisor to the Minister of Mines and Energy; José Nilton de Souza Vieira, General Coordinator of Ethanol and Biomethane at the Ministry of Mines and Energy; and Bruno Silva, Environmental Officer at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
