Africa today: progress and challenges
By resuming Brazil's leading role on the international stage, we will naturally return to a historically significant trend: the study of bilateral relations between Brazil and African nations, as Ambassador Gelson Fonseca Jr., Founder of CEBRI and Director of the Center for History and Diplomatic Documentation (CHDD) of the Alexandre de Gusmão Foundation (FUNAG), highlighted at the opening of the event "Africa today: advances and challenges".
In a conversation with Antonia Aparecida Quintão, Senior Researcher at CEBRI, President of Geledés Instituto da Mulher Negra and Vice-President at Instituto Histórico e Geográfico de São Paulo, Mathias Alencastro, Special Advisor to the Ministry of Finance, and Ambassador Carlos Sérgio Sobral Duarte, Secretary for Africa and the Middle East at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, important issues for the common agenda of Brazil and African countries were discussed.
The importance of studying relations between Brazil and Africa and promoting dialogue and connection with African countries was discussed at the meeting. "Promoting connections with African countries is extremely valuable for Brazil because it will certainly contribute to our social sustainability and to our strengthening as a nation, as it promotes an encounter from Brazil to its essence, its roots and its identity," reflects Antonia Aparecida Quintão.
Moderated by Antonio Augusto Martins César, Senior Fellow at CEBRI and Chief of Staff of the Secretariat for Africa and the Middle East at the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the event also discussed topics such as the importance of African history for Brazil’s constitution, the transitions of power in African countries and how the continent's young and growing population makes it an important partner for Brazil in commercial and political terms, especially considering the joint of the African Union to G20.
