On Friday, February 3rd, the restricted meeting "Environmental Degradation, Climate Change and Insecurity" was held at the headquarters of the Brazilian Center for International Relations (CEBRI), in Rio de Janeiro, in partnership with the Igarapé Institute and the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). The event sought to debate the issues of climate change and security, in light of SIPRI's report "Environment of Peace: Security in a New Era of Risk", available HERE.
The correlation between climate change and insecurity is twofold: while environmental crimes such as illegal mining and deforestation contribute to climate change on the one hand, environmental degradation enhances threats to human and state security on the other. Therefore, in the interconnected world we live in, it is essential to build cooperative solutions to problems that affect everyone, such as accelerating poverty, inequality, and the risks to human life generated by environmental degradation.
Furthermore, such solutions must take into account the different characteristics and needs of each country, striving for a just and peaceful green transition. After all, threats to nature are also threats to peace - and vice versa.
The subject of climate change and security is on the agenda of several of CEBRI's Thematic Programs, such as Environment and Climate Change, Multilateralism, and Defense and International Security. CEBRI is committed to debating and proposing solutions to these issues.
