Armando Mariante: Moral, Civic Capital and Freud's Discontent

  • 05 september 2022

In his article "Moral, Capital Cívico e o Mal-Estar de Freud" ("Moral, Civic Capital and Freud's Discontent"), Armando Mariante, Trustee at CEBRI, reflects on the relationship between civic capital and social inequality. He then presents recent data and views different authors have on these concepts.

"Civic capital is directly related to education and the presence of social protection, minimum wage, and education systems aimed at the underprivileged. Such social structures of dignity are fundamental to fostering morals and civic capital. They are not sufficient, but they are certainly necessary to grease the wheels of a well-functioning society; a sustainable social contract, as seen through the lens of Hobbes, Locke, and Rousseau. At the end of the day, what is civilization but a critical mass of civic capital that enables and preserves a social contract."
