Hydrogen in Brazilian Steelmaking: challenges for a just energy transition in carbon-intensive sectors

CEBRI, in collaboration with the international consultancy NIRAS, is hosting the online event "Hydrogen in Brazilian Steelmaking: Challenges for a Fair Energy Transition in Carbon-Intensive Sectors." The event focuses on the technical feasibility and socioeconomic challenges of using hydrogen in steel production, aiming not only at technological advances but also at social and economic justice in carbon-intensive sectors. Broadcast live via Zoom and YouTube, this meeting is part of the H2Brasil project, implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and the Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), with support from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

During the meeting, key stakeholders, including representatives from industry, companies, government, financial institutions, academia, and third-sector organizations, will discuss the strategic recommendations of the final report. This discussion seeks to align decarbonization goals with the competitiveness of the Brazilian steel industry, emphasizing Brazil’s global leadership and the integration of new technologies. It also aims to consolidate the project’s conclusions and establish a basis for future dialogues on the implementation of proposed solutions, promoting sustainable regional development and strengthening the competitive position of the Brazilian steel industry on the international stage.
