On December 11, CEBRI, in partnership with the Institute of the Americas (IoA), hosted the conference "Regional Integration as a Catalyst for Energy Transition." Held at the Fairmont Copacabana Hotel with support from Siemens Energy, Integra Capital, Origem, and ERM, the event brought together experts and representatives from the energy sector of South America to discuss how regional integration can drive a more sustainable and diversified energy matrix.
The conference generated a report that compiles the main points discussed by the experts and their conclusions on the topic. The document, available in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, offers insights from the discussions.
Coordinated regional planning and investments can promote energy security and optimize regional energy systems, particularly in cases of underutilized interconnections, such as the Garabi plant located between Argentina and Brazil.
The South American energy sector suffers from inconsistent policies, underinvestment, and high financing costs.
To change this landscape, it is crucial to increase private sector engagement and rely on the support of multilateral development banks.
South America should maximize the use of its energy sources, including renewables and natural gas, viewing these resources as assets that need to be fully utilized (e.g., efficient distribution and storage).
The shared vision among experts is to transform South America into a global leader in renewable energy and energy security.
