At the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) in Baku, CEBRI engaged in strategic discussions on key issues such as critical minerals, a just energy transition, climate finance mechanisms, and sustainable practices.
On November 14, Rafaela Guedes, Senior Fellow at CEBRI, participated in the roundtable “Beyond Extraction: Developing Critical Minerals in the Global South,” organized by Swaniti Global in partnership with the India Climate Collaborative.
The event delved into the critical minerals agenda in Global South countries, focusing on strengthening value chains, ensuring benefits for local communities, and fostering opportunities for South-South cooperation. The discussion brought together experts and policymakers from Brazil, India, Indonesia, and South Africa to address topics such as benefit-sharing mechanisms, ESG standards in mining, and the economic and social potential of extracting transition minerals.
The panel also featured contributions from Ian Barlow, Fellow at the Global Climate and Development Institute (GCDI), Swaniti Global; Kristi Disney Bruckner, Law and Policy Director at the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA); Anthony Dane, Founding Partner at Southern Transitions; Felipe Arango García, Executive Director at Transforma; and Chinmayi Shalya, Senior Fellow at GCDI, Swaniti Global.
