Late last week, the first official meeting between US and Chinese diplomats since the Biden administration took office took place in Anchorage, Alaska. The US delegation was led by Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. On the Chinese side, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and experienced Communist Party Diplomat Yang Jiechi were present.

Since the Democrats regained the presidency, Chinese-US relations have been fraught with high expectations. This is, in part, because Joe Biden succeeds Donald Trump, who imprinted an aggressive policy against China. In addition, the circumstances imposed by the pandemic add complexity to the already consolidated hegemonic dispute between the two countries.
