Winds of Change: Opportunities for Unlocking Brazil’s Offshore Wind Potential and Experiences from Denmark

  • Institutional

Denmark is globally recognized as a pioneer in offshore wind energy generation, an energy source considered to be a cornerstone in meeting global energy transition goals and achieving climate targets. In addition to electricity generation, offshore wind energy can be applied in areas such as green hydrogen production and water desalination, thus expanding its economic and sustainable potential. Brazil, on the other hand, has as its main source of electrical generation the hydroelectric plants. However, aspiring to achieve a successful energy transition and considered to have one of the best offshore wind resources in the world, Brazil cannot ignore the potential benefits of investing in offshore wind power. Some of the trickiest stages of an offshore wind project are those dedicated to consenting, an overarching term entailing all aspects of ensuring that the project meets environmental, safety, navigational, and grid connection standards.

The event will mark the launching of a whitepaper written by CEBRI and the Danish Energy Agency (DEA) that analyzes Denmark's experiences in offshore wind farm concessions as well as potential lessons learned helping to optimize Brazil´s path in this sector.
