This CEBRI Dossier Special Edition is a direct product of the International Conference convened by the Brazilian Center for International Relations (CEBRI) and the Clingendael Institute. The Conference took place in Brasilia, Brazil on the 29th of May, 2012. The Conference counted with both Brazilian and Dutch experts from different backgrounds including the military, academia, the UN, the government and civil society. Most of the papers published here are a reflection of the discussions carried out during the conference.

The debate on New Approaches to International Security focused mainly on the Brazilian and Dutch experience and how both countries could develop a deeper partnership in dealing with future threats. In recent years, both Brazil and the Netherlands have played an active role in humanitarian relief, peacekeeping and stabilization operations. Both countries have carried out these operations under the auspices of the United Nations and the Netherlands has also done so as part of NATO and the EU. Brazil and the Netherlands' involvement in said operations corroborates their willingness to support efforts to maintain and restore peace and order in conflict areas, to contribute to stabilization and reconstruction and, more generally, to stimulate economic and political development. For both Brazil and the Netherlands, the nexus between development and long-term security is a guiding principle.
